The 2027 Elantra is a full redesign, but its US version has not been shown yet, so the best preview is the Avante, the same eighth-generation car already on sale in Korea. It is roomier, boxier and far more high-tech than the 2026 Elantra, while US prices and timing remain unannounced. Here is what that means if you are choosing between a 2026 now and a 2027 later.

Quick Verdict

Should You Buy a 2026 Elantra or Wait for the 2027?

  • Buy the 2026 if you need a sedan within the next few months, want the 54-mpg Hybrid Blue, the N Line or the Elantra N, or plan to use year-end offers: prices start at $22,825.
  • Wait for the 2027 if your current car can last into 2027 and the larger cabin, the Pleos Connect screens with Gleo AI or the stronger hybrid matter to you.
  • Our advice: for most New Yorkers who need a car this winter, the 2026 is the practical choice, since no one yet knows what the 2027 will cost or when it lands.

How we compared: with no US presentation of the 2027 Elantra so far, the photos and 2027 figures here show the Avante, the Elantra built for Korea; we expect the US car to be very similar, though equipment and ratings may change. Each photo row puts today's US Elantra on the left and the Avante on the right. Prices are 2026 MSRPs before the $1,295 destination charge. Launch timing for New York is followed in our 2027 Elantra release date and price guide for NYC drivers.

What Does the All-New 2027 Elantra Change?

Almost everything you can see and touch. Hyundai first showed the eighth-generation car at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show, and it trades the current Elantra's swoopy, coupe-like shape for a more upright "Art of Steel" look with headlights split into two tiers, door handles that sit flush and a crisp, squared rear end. The structure is stiffer as well: Hyundai's engineers raised the share of ultra-high-strength steel in the body from about 53 to nearly 59 percent. In the cabin, the twin screens of today's car give way to one large central display and a separate slim gauge screen, both running the new Pleos Connect software.

Hyundai's US press site still shows the 2026 as the latest Elantra, with no 2027 trims, equipment or prices. The Avante gives US shoppers a clear preview, but details such as screen sizes and fuel economy can change on the way to America.

Is the 2027 Elantra Bigger? Size and Rear-Seat Space

It is. Measured against the outgoing car, the Korean Avante gains 55 mm (2.2 inches) in length and 30 mm (1.2 inches) in width, and its wheelbase grows by the same 30 mm to 108.3 inches. Hyundai reports more rear legroom, headroom and shoulder room, partly thanks to slimmer front seatbacks, and Korean press describe the cabin as nearly midsize. The trunk opening widens by 45 mm. The Korean trunk figure of 479 liters uses the European VDA method, so it is not comparable with the 2026's EPA figure of 14.2 cubic feet. If you often carry grown-ups in the rear, the longer wheelbase is what you will notice most, although the current car's 38.0 inches of rear legroom is already decent.

What Is New Inside: Pleos Connect and Gleo AI

The interior takes the biggest step forward. In Korea, every Avante gets a 12.9- or 14.6-inch Pleos Connect touchscreen, which can run one app full-screen or two side by side, supports downloadable apps and updates itself over the air. A thin 9.9-inch screen sits ahead of the driver. Gleo AI, Hyundai's generative assistant, understands requests that combine several commands, operates vehicle functions and can pull live information from the web. Real buttons remain for climate and audio, a relief when you want more heat while stopped on Flatbush Avenue. By contrast, most 2026 trims make do with an 8-inch touchscreen, and only the Limited and N Line pair two 10.25-inch displays. Which screen US versions of the new car get is still unannounced.

Engines and Elantra Hybrid: What Changes Under the Hood?

The gas engine stays familiar: a 2.0-liter four with 147 hp in both the 2026 US Elantra and the Korean Avante. The hybrid is where the new car moves ahead. A third-generation 1.6-liter engine works with a 45-kW electric motor and a 1.49-kWh battery for 155 hp, 16 more than today's Elantra Hybrid. Its second-generation dual-clutch gearbox drops the mechanical reverse gear, letting the motor handle reversing, which saves weight. Hyundai quotes acceleration to 62 mph about 6 percent quicker and 50-to-75-mph passing about 17 percent quicker, and targets around 10 percent better efficiency in Korea. The new hybrid also adds vehicle-to-load (V2L), so you can power devices from its battery. Until the EPA rates it, the 2026 Hybrid Blue's 54 mpg combined is the figure to plan around.

Elantra N and N Line: What Happens to the Sporty Models?

Right now they exist only as 2026 models. Hyundai's July 29, 2026 price sheet still lists the 201-hp Elantra N Line at $29,600, the 276-hp Elantra N from $35,300 and the limited N TCR Edition from $39,450. Hyundai showed neither an N Line nor an N alongside the new Avante. Kelley Blue Book reports that an Elantra N is planned for the new generation with a new 2.5-liter turbo, while there is no word on an N Line. If you want a sporty Elantra in the next year, the 2026 is your only option. Every current trim is broken down in Hyundai Elantra Trims Compared.

2026 vs 2027 Elantra Prices: What Will the New Model Cost?

US pricing for the 2027 has not been released. Korea's Avante starts at 23.98 million won with the gas engine and 30.42 million won as a hybrid, before tax incentives, but Korean taxes and equipment make those numbers a poor guide to US stickers. The full 2026 US lineup is the reference point:

A larger car with bigger screens and an AI assistant will probably cost somewhat more once US pricing appears. Meanwhile the 2026 has fixed prices and current offers, so look at Hyundai incentives and lease specials, get pre-approved and value your trade-in.

Buy a 2026 Elantra Now or Wait?

Go with a 2026 when your lease is about to expire, when an N Line or N is on your list, or when you prefer a known price and this season's incentives; it is a proven sedan with a 54-mpg hybrid option. Hold out for the 2027 if you can keep driving your current car into next year and you want the larger body, Pleos Connect with Gleo AI or the 155-hp hybrid, accepting that the first cars are usually scarce and the sticker is still unknown. If a compact sedan feels too small, weigh the midsize option in Hyundai Elantra vs Sonata.

2026 vs 2027 Hyundai Elantra: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 2026 and 2027 Hyundai Elantra?

The 2027 begins a new, eighth generation. Going by the Korean Avante, the body grows roughly 2.2 inches in length and 1.2 inches in width with an equally longer wheelbase, the styling turns boxier, a Pleos Connect display of 12.9 or 14.6 inches brings Gleo AI, and the hybrid rises from 139 to 155 hp. US specifications and prices are not yet announced.

When does the 2027 Elantra come out in the U.S.?

No US on-sale date had been announced by November 4, 2026. Kelley Blue Book expects US showrooms to receive the 2027 Elantra in 2027, following a North American debut; Korea began taking orders for the Avante in August 2026.

Is there a 2027 Elantra N?

Not officially. Hyundai revealed the new car without an N, but Kelley Blue Book reports that an Elantra N with a new turbocharged 2.5-liter engine is planned. The 276-hp 2026 Elantra N is still on sale from $35,300.
