2027 Hyundai Avante driver-side profile, the Korean-market version of the redesigned Hyundai Elantra

2027 Hyundai Elantra: What Changed, When It Arrives, and What You Can Buy Now

Published August 19, 2026  |  Last updated: August 19, 2026  |  Plaza Hyundai, Brooklyn, NY

Hyundai pulled the sheet off the eighth-generation Elantra at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show in June, and it is not a light refresh. New sheetmetal, a bigger footprint, a rebuilt cabin, a new infotainment platform. If you drive in the five boroughs and your lease is winding down, the question is whether to wait or take what is on the ground today.

One caveat. The car Hyundai showed is the Avante, the Elantra's home-market name. Korean specification is confirmed; U.S. specification, trims and pricing are not, and everything below keeps the two separate.

What's changing on the 2027 Hyundai Elantra?

Start with the body. Hyundai calls the styling direction "Art of Steel," and the familiar compact silhouette gives way to something squarer and more deliberate. Split headlamps put slim daytime running lights above the beams, door handles sit flush, and a new quarter window appears at the C-pillar. At the back the trunk lid squares off, with vertical LED elements at the outer edges and horizontal strips across the lid.

It also grew: 55 mm longer (about 2.2 inches), 30 mm wider, wheelbase stretched another 30 mm. Hyundai went as far as calling the cabin nearly midsize. Rear passengers pick up 29 mm of legroom, 18 mm of headroom and 22 mm of shoulder room. Small on paper, noticeable when three adults share the bench to LaGuardia.

The cabin is where the real jump happens

The instrument cluster moved. Instead of sitting beside the touchscreen it perches on its own island near the base of the windshield, at 9.9 inches. The center screen is 12.9 inches standard in Korea, 14.6 optional. Running on both is Pleos Connect, Hyundai's Android Automotive based system, with a generative assistant called Gleo AI. Critically for anyone who has fought a touchscreen at a light on Ocean Parkway, physical climate and media buttons survive under the display.

Not confirmed for the U.S.: Pleos Connect and Gleo AI have been detailed for Korea only. Industry watchers expect the hardware to carry over with market-specific software tuning, but Hyundai has announced nothing about screen sizes or trim assignments here.

Under the hood

Two powertrains launched in Korea. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four makes 147 horsepower there, up 25 hp, with a CVT. The 1.6-liter hybrid moves to 155 hp with a six-speed dual-clutch: 104 hp from the engine plus a 45 kW motor worth roughly 60 hp. The hybrid also gets Hyundai's newest regenerative braking and a Stay Mode that runs climate and infotainment off the battery while parked, the way an EV does. Anyone who has waited out alternate-side parking in August will get the appeal.

For U.S. shoppers the 147 hp figure is not news, since our Elantra already makes it. The hybrid number is genuinely higher than our 139 hp, though EPA certification could land elsewhere. No N Line or N appeared at launch, and Hyundai has confirmed a high-performance N with a larger engine without giving timing.

When is the 2027 Hyundai Elantra release date?

Short answer: Hyundai has not announced a U.S. on-sale date. Here is the timeline as it stands.

2027 Hyundai Elantra / Avante — confirmed and expected timing
  • June 2026Global reveal. Unveiled as the Avante at the 2026 Busan Mobility Show. Confirmed.
  • June–July 2026Korean orders open. Reservations hit 11,094 in the first 24 hours, past the record the previous generation set in 2020. Confirmed.
  • Q3 2026Korean deliveries begin for the 2.0-liter gas car; the hybrid follows once it clears eco-vehicle tax certification. Confirmed.
  • Early 2027U.S.-specification reveal. Widely reported expectation, not a Hyundai announcement.
  • During 2027U.S. dealership arrival. Industry reporting points to calendar 2027. Hyundai has not confirmed timing or launch trim structure.

In practice: if your lease matures inside the next twelve months, the redesigned car is very unlikely to be on a lot when you need it. Your realistic options are a 2026 Elantra now, a short extension, or a certified pre-owned car to bridge the gap. We are tracking the same story on the 2027 Hyundai Tucson and Tucson Hybrid.

Will the 2027 Hyundai Elantra cost more?

Almost certainly, though nobody outside Hyundai knows by how much. U.S. pricing has not been announced.

Korea sells the car in three tiers called Modern, Premium and Inspiration, with the 2.0-liter ladder running roughly $16,850 to $22,150 converted. Those numbers do not transfer: different tax structure, different standard content, and U.S. Elantras have always carried more equipment at the base level.

The useful benchmark is the current car, which opens at $23,870 for the SE and tops out at $36,345 for the Elantra N. A model that is longer, wider and carrying far more screen and software would be unusual to price flat. Industry expectation is a modest increase in the mid and upper trims, with Hyundai protecting the entry point because value has always been this car's argument. Expectation, not confirmation.

Practical read: if the current Elantra already fits your budget and commute, buying or leasing a 2026 while incentives are active is defensible, since model-year changeovers are usually when factory support is strongest. Current Plaza Hyundai specials update as Hyundai publishes new programs.

Why the Elantra fits New York driving

Compact sedans get written off as starter cars. Here they are frequently the smarter tool. The Elantra is about 15 feet long and just under 72 inches wide, which is the difference between fitting a legal spot on a side street in Astoria and circling for another fifteen minutes. It is narrow enough for older garages with tight ramp turns and low enough to clear height bars that stop a full-size SUV cold. Every Elantra is front-wheel drive with no AWD option, so if you park outdoors through a winter here, budget for proper winter tires.

Fuel economy is the other half. City driving is stop-and-go by nature, which is exactly where a hybrid does its best work. The Hybrid Blue is rated 51 mpg in the city, with the motor handling the crawl between lights on Queens Boulevard while the gas engine stays out of it. If your week is short trips, bridge approaches and long idles rather than open highway, the hybrid's real-world edge tends to be wider than the EPA spread suggests. Run the Belt Parkway instead and the gas SE at 40 mpg highway is hard to argue with. Standard blind-spot monitoring earns its keep on avenues where a delivery e-bike appears from nowhere.

Hyundai Bluelink is worth a mention too. Remote start and climate from your phone is a real gain when the car has been sitting in a snowbank or baking through a July heat wave.

Cross-shopping is normal, and we would rather you do it properly. The Honda Civic, Kia K4 and Kia K5 are the direct rivals, and Plaza Auto Mall sells two of the three a few minutes' walk away. If a sedan is the wrong shape for your life, the Hyundai SUV lineup starts with the Venue and Kona, or move up the sedan range to the Sonata.

Awards and safety recognition

The 2026 Elantra and Elantra Hybrid, excluding the Elantra N, earned a 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK. The criteria tightened this year, adding a required good rating in the moderate front overlap test plus stricter rear-seat protection standards, so holding the award through a harder rulebook counts. IIHS named 63 winners for 2026, and the Elantra sits alongside the Honda Accord, Honda Civic and Toyota Prius among Top Safety Pick models under $30,000.

Both versions also carry a 5 out of 5 star overall rating from NHTSA, among eleven 2026 Hyundai models with full marks, and Hyundai took seven IIHS Top Safety awards for 2026. The warranty belongs in the value case too: 10 years or 100,000 miles powertrain, 5 years or 60,000 miles basic, and 5 years roadside assistance.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2027 Hyundai Elantra a full redesign or a facelift?

A full redesign. The car revealed in June 2026 is the eighth generation and the first complete redesign since 2021, with new bodywork under Hyundai's "Art of Steel" language, a larger body and wheelbase, and a new interior and infotainment platform.

When can I actually buy a 2027 Elantra in New York?

Hyundai has not announced a U.S. on-sale date. Korean deliveries of the gas model began in Q3 2026, and reporting points to a U.S.-spec reveal in early 2027 with dealership arrival during that year. Neither is confirmed. Contact Plaza Hyundai to be notified when allocation information appears.

How much bigger is the 2027 Elantra?

Per the Korean specs, 55 mm longer (about 2.2 inches) and 30 mm wider, with the wheelbase stretched 30 mm. Rear passengers gain 29 mm of legroom, 18 mm of headroom and 22 mm of shoulder room. U.S. dimensions have not been published.

Will the 2027 Elantra still be offered as a hybrid?

Yes in Korea, where a 1.6-liter hybrid rated at 155 hp launched alongside the gas engine, with a six-speed dual-clutch and a Stay Mode that powers climate and infotainment from the battery while parked. U.S. specification is unannounced. The 2026 Elantra Hybrid sold here makes 139 hp and is rated up to 54 mpg combined in Blue trim.

Are the Elantra N Line and Elantra N coming back?

Neither appeared in the launch lineup, though Hyundai has confirmed a high-performance N with a larger engine without timing. For a performance Elantra now, the 2026 N runs a 276 hp turbo 2.0-liter (286 hp on N Grin Shift) with the 201 hp N Line below it.

What are Pleos Connect and Gleo AI?

Pleos Connect is Hyundai's Android Automotive based infotainment system, pairing a 12.9-inch standard touchscreen (14.6 optional in Korea) with a 9.9-inch instrument display. Gleo AI is the generative voice assistant on it, able to interpret conversational phrasing and control supported functions. U.S. availability is unconfirmed.

Should I wait for the 2027 or buy a 2026 Elantra now?

It depends on your timeline. If you need a car within the next year, waiting is impractical since the redesigned model has no confirmed U.S. arrival date, and outgoing model years usually carry the strongest factory support. If you can wait into 2027 and want the new screens and larger back seat, waiting makes sense.

Does Plaza Hyundai deliver, and how does service pickup work?

Yes. Purchased vehicles are delivered free within a 25-mile radius, covering most of the five boroughs and a stretch of Nassau County. Service pickup and drop-off runs throughout the NYC Metro area, so your car can be collected and returned without you sitting in a waiting room. Schedule service.

Can I get pre-approved without giving my Social Security number?

Yes. Plaza Hyundai's online pre-approval does not require a Social Security number or date of birth to begin, so you can see where you stand before sharing sensitive information. Our we buy cars team appraises trade-ins either way.

What else does Plaza Auto Mall sell besides Hyundai?

Five new-vehicle brands with certified pre-owned programs on each: Hyundai, Honda, Toyota, Kia and Acura, all within a seven-minute walk with more than 1,000 vehicles in stock combined. Cross-shop an Elantra against a Civic, a K4 or a Corolla in one visit. Certified Hyundais go through our documented inspection process.

Where can I browse used cars from all brands at once?

The combined multibrand list is at Plaza Auto Mall used inventory, which pools pre-owned vehicles from every rooftop into one searchable place. That is the fastest way to compare across makes when you are shopping on budget rather than badge. Hyundai listings sit at used inventory and certified inventory.
