Elantra SE vs SEL

What is the difference between the Elantra SE and SEL? For 2026 the SEL comes as three SEL Sport trims, and the jump from the SE is mostly convenience. The SE ($22,825) already has the essentials: an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and lane keeping assist. The SEL Sport ($23,950) adds 17-inch alloys, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless phone charging and a hands-free trunk. The SEL Sport Plus ($24,450), new on Hyundai's July 2026 price sheet, adds a power sunroof and heated front seats, which most New Yorkers will want by January. The SEL Sport Premium ($25,275) adds heated mirrors and a more advanced forward collision-avoidance system that also detects cyclists and cars turning across your path. The SE, all three SEL Sport trims and the Limited use the same 147-hp 2.0-liter engine and CVT. The SE is rated 31/40/35 mpg city/highway/combined thanks to engine stop-start; the SEL Sport trims and Limited are rated 30/40/34 (EPA).

Elantra SEL vs Limited

Is the top Elantra trim worth it? The Limited ($27,375) costs $2,100 more than the SEL Sport Premium and is the most affordable Elantra with dual 10.25-inch screens (a digital gauge cluster plus a navigation touchscreen), H-Tex synthetic leather seats, eight-speaker Bose audio, customizable ambient lighting and Highway Driving Assist, which keeps you centered and spaced on the Belt Parkway or the LIE. It is worth it if you commute on highways or want the upscale cabin; if you mostly drive short city trips, the SEL Sport Plus gives you most of the comfort for $2,925 less. If you need more room than any Elantra offers, compare it with the midsize sedan in Hyundai Elantra vs Sonata.

Elantra N Line vs Elantra N

The N Line ($29,600) is the sporty Elantra for everyday driving: a 1.6-liter turbo with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft, a seven-speed dual-clutch with paddle shifters, multilink rear suspension, larger front brakes, 18-inch wheels and its own bumpers and rear diffuser. It is rated 31 mpg combined.

The Elantra N ($35,300 with a six-speed manual, $36,800 with an eight-speed dual-clutch) is a different car: a 2.0-liter turbo with 276 hp and 289 lb-ft, an electronic limited-slip differential, adaptive dampers and 19-inch wheels on performance tires. Edmunds measured 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds with the dual-clutch and 6.4 with the manual, against 9.4 for a base Elantra. The price is a firmer ride and 23 to 24 mpg combined. The N TCR Edition ($39,450 to $40,950) adds a carbon-fiber swan-neck wing, lighter 19-inch wheels, four-piston monobloc front brakes and Alcantara trim (Motor1). Choose the N Line for a quick daily driver; choose the N if you plan track days or simply want the most fun front-drive sedan Hyundai sells (2026 Elantra N).

Elantra Hybrid Trims

The Elantra Hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter engine with an electric motor for 139 hp and a six-speed dual-clutch. The Hybrid Blue ($25,650) is rated 51/58/54 mpg and is the one to buy for stop-and-go city driving; the Hybrid SEL Sport, SEL Sport Plus and Limited are rated 49/52/50. Note the pricing: Hyundai's July 2026 price sheet lists the newer Hybrid SEL Sport Plus at $27,300, $325 below the Hybrid SEL Sport ($27,625), even though it has a sunroof, heated front seats and remote start, so it is the better buy of the two; check the window sticker for any equipment differences. Hybrid Blue vs Limited ($30,000) comes down to 4 mpg against the Limited's synthetic leather seats, Bose audio and dual screens for $4,350 more.

Estimated annual fuel use and cost at 12,000 miles, using EPA combined ratings and the AAA New York regular average on October 22, 2026: $4.40 a gallon.
VersionGallons a yearCost a year
Elantra SE (35 mpg)343$1,509
Elantra SEL Sport / Limited (34 mpg)353$1,553
Elantra N Line (31 mpg)387$1,703
Elantra Hybrid SEL Sport / Limited (50 mpg)240$1,056
Elantra Hybrid Blue (54 mpg)222$978

At 12,000 miles a year and $4.40 a gallon, the Hybrid Blue saves about $530 a year over a gas Elantra SE and about $575 over an SEL Sport or Limited, so its $2,825 premium over the SE pays back in a little over five years.

Older Elantra Trims: GLS, SE Sport and Value Edition

Shopping a used Elantra? The trim names have changed over the years:

  • GLS was the base trim of earlier generations; for 2014, the GLS became the SE (J.D. Power).
  • Value Edition sat between the SE and Limited in the late 2010s, including the 2018 lineup, bundling popular options at a lower price.
  • Sport was the performance trim; the 2018 Sport used a 201-hp 1.6-liter turbo with a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch, and the N Line replaced it for 2021. Hyundai did not sell an Elantra sedan trim called SE Sport; searches for it usually mean the older Sport or today's SEL Sport.
  • Eco, on the 2017 to 2018 lineups, used a 128-hp 1.4-liter turbo and a seven-speed dual-clutch for better mileage (Cars.com).
  • 2018 SE vs SEL: the SEL arrived for 2018 and bundled what had been an $800 SE option package: 16-inch alloys, a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a backup camera and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. It started at $18,850 against $16,950 for the SE (Cars.com, iSeeCars).
  • 2020 SE vs SEL: in the last year of the previous body style, the SEL added alloy wheels, blind-spot warning, a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio and heated mirrors; the SE was rated 35 mpg combined against 34 for the SEL (Kelley Blue Book).
  • 2023 SE vs SEL: on the current body style (2021 on), the SEL started at $21,750 against $20,500 for the SE and added 16-inch alloys, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hands-free trunk, six speakers and Bluelink. Its $1,900 Convenience Package added dual 10.25-inch screens, adaptive cruise and heated front seats, but switched Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from wireless to wired (Autotrader).

Any certified pre-owned Elantra must be six model years old or newer with no more than 80,000 miles and keeps 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage from its original in-service date; see the Hyundai Certified Used Vehicles program.
