Hyundai Elantra vs Sonata: Which Hyundai Sedan Should You Buy?

Published October 23, 2026 · Last updated October 23, 2026

Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Sonata side by side

The Elantra is the cheaper, more efficient sedan and the easier one to park; the Sonata is bigger up front, quicker and the only one of the two with all-wheel drive. The 2026 Elantra SE starts at $22,825, $4,625 less than the 2026 Sonata SE at $27,450, and as hybrids the Elantra Hybrid Blue ($25,650) costs $3,550 less than the Sonata Hybrid Blue ($29,200) while getting 54 mpg combined against 51. The Sonata answers with 191 hp from its base engine, a 290-hp N Line, available AWD, a bigger trunk and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. One surprise: the smaller Elantra has more rear legroom. Both are front-wheel-drive five-seaters on the lot at Plaza Hyundai. Here is how they compare for drivers in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island and across New York City.

Quick Verdict

Elantra or Sonata: The Short Answer

  • Choose the Hyundai Elantra if price, fuel cost and parking matter most: it starts $4,625 lower, is 7.9 inches shorter, offers 38 inches of rear legroom against 34.8 in the Sonata, and the Elantra Hybrid is rated up to 54 mpg combined.
  • Choose the Hyundai Sonata if you want a roomier front seat, more power and more stability: 46.1 inches of front legroom against 42.3, 191 hp standard, a 290-hp N Line, HTRAC all-wheel drive on the SEL Sport and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
  • Hybrid against hybrid: the Elantra Hybrid Blue gets 54 mpg combined and the Sonata Hybrid Blue 51; the Sonata Hybrid has more power (192 hp against 139) and a bigger cabin.
  • Our take: for most New York drivers, the Elantra Hybrid is the smarter buy. Pick the Sonata for long highway commutes, tall front-seat passengers or AWD.

Size: Compact vs Midsize

The Elantra is a compact sedan and the Sonata a midsize one. The Sonata is 193.3 inches long on a 111.8-inch wheelbase, 73.2 inches wide and 56.9 inches tall; the Elantra is 185.4 inches long on a 107.1-inch wheelbase, 71.9 inches wide and 55.7 inches tall. Those 7.9 inches matter on a Park Slope block or in a tight Long Island City garage, where the Elantra slips into spots the Sonata has to pass. Both sit 5.3 inches off the ground, so neither loves a steep driveway apron.

Interior and Rear-Seat Room

Both seat five, and the Sonata has more space overall: 104.4 cubic feet of passenger volume against 99.4. It puts that space up front, with 46.1 inches of front legroom against 42.3, which tall drivers will feel right away. The back seat is the surprise. The Elantra offers 38 inches of rear legroom and the Sonata 34.8, so rear passengers, and rear-facing car seats, often have more room in the smaller car. The Sonata's sloping roofline also trims rear headroom slightly for taller passengers. Bring your car seats to Plaza Hyundai and try them in both.

Trunk Space

The Sonata's trunk holds 15.6 cubic feet against 14.2 in the Elantra, and the gap stays the same with the hybrids, which keep their full trunks. That 1.4 cubic feet is roughly one extra carry-on bag. Both have split-folding rear seats for longer items; the Elantra N gives up some pass-through space to a chassis brace behind the rear seat.

Engines and Performance, Including N Line

The base engines are where the Sonata pulls ahead. The Elantra uses a 2.0-liter four with 147 hp and a CVT; Edmunds measured 9.4 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, slower than average for a small sedan. The Sonata uses a 2.5-liter four with 191 hp and 181 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic, and it is the only one of the two offered with all-wheel drive, a $1,500 option on the SEL Sport that helps on unplowed side streets in January.

Among hybrids, the Sonata Hybrid's 2.0-liter system makes 192 hp against 139 in the Elantra Hybrid, and Edmunds measured 8.3 seconds to 60 against 9.0. For more power, the Elantra N Line has a 201-hp 1.6-liter turbo and a dual-clutch transmission, while the Sonata N Line has a 290-hp, 311 lb-ft 2.5-liter turbo, the strongest engine in either lineup. The fastest of all is the Elantra N, a 276-hp track-capable sedan from $35,300 that Edmunds timed at 5.5 seconds to 60 with its automatic, for less than a Sonata N Line.

Fuel Economy: Hybrid vs Hybrid

The Elantra wins on fuel cost, and both base engines run on regular. The gas Elantra SE is rated 31 mpg city, 40 highway and 35 combined; the Sonata SE is rated 28/38/32, the SEL Sport 25/36/29 and the SEL Sport AWD 24/33/27. Among hybrids, the Elantra Hybrid Blue is rated 51/58/54 and other Elantra Hybrids 49/52/50, while the Sonata Hybrid Blue is rated 47/56/51 and the SEL and Limited Hybrid 44/51/47 (Plaza Hyundai, cars.com).

Estimated annual fuel use and cost at 12,000 miles, using EPA combined ratings and the AAA New York regular average on October 22, 2026: $4.40 a gallon.
VersionFuelGallons a yearCost a year
Elantra SE (35 mpg)Regular343$1,510
Sonata SE (32 mpg)Regular375$1,652
Elantra Hybrid Blue (54 mpg)Regular222$979
Sonata Hybrid Blue (51 mpg)Regular235$1,036

The Elantra Hybrid Blue saves about $530 a year over a gas Elantra and about $670 over a gas Sonata; against the Sonata Hybrid Blue, the gap is a small $57 a year.

Technology and Safety

The Sonata has the bigger screens. Every Sonata has a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the SEL Sport and N Line add the panoramic curved display, heated front seats and wireless charging; the N Line also gets 12-speaker Bose audio. The Elantra starts with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and dual 10.25-inch displays are available from the SEL Sport up; Bose audio is available on the Limited and N Line.

Every 2026 Hyundai comes with Hyundai SmartSense safety features as standard, including forward collision-avoidance assist and blind-spot collision-avoidance assist. The Sonata earned a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and the Elantra and Elantra Hybrid a Top Safety Pick, one step below. Both have five-star overall NHTSA ratings, the Elantra excluding the N (Hyundai).

Reliability and Resale Value

RepairPal rates both 4.0 out of 5: the Elantra 11th of 46 compact cars with average repairs of $363 a year, and the Sonata 9th of 28 midsize cars at $406 a year (RepairPal data via Edmunds for Elantra and Sonata, based on earlier model years). The current Elantra has been on sale since 2021 and the current Sonata since 2020, so both powertrains have a long record. Check any vehicle's VIN for open recalls at NHTSA; the 2026 recalls Edmunds lists for both are fixed free at the dealer.

Ownership coverage is identical: a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty, 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage for the original owner, 10 years or 100,000 miles on hybrid batteries and 5 years of roadside assistance (Hyundai warranty). A Hyundai Certified Used Vehicle must be six model years old or newer with no more than 80,000 miles, passes a 173-point inspection and keeps 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage from the original in-service date. See certified pre-owned Hyundais and the Certified Used Vehicles program.

Trims and Price Compared

Trim for trim, the Sonata costs $3,550 to $8,250 more: $27,450 against $22,825 for the base gas cars, $29,200 against $25,650 for the Blue hybrids and $38,250 against $30,000 for the top hybrids. The fairer comparison is equipment against size. A loaded Elantra Limited at $27,375 costs about the same as a base Sonata SE at $27,450, so the same money buys either the smaller car with more features or the bigger car with the stronger engine.

Yes, outside and up front. The Sonata is 7.9 inches longer (193.3 against 185.4 inches) on a wheelbase 4.7 inches longer, with 46.1 inches of front legroom against 42.3 and a 15.6-cubic-foot trunk against 14.2. Elantra Hybrid vs Sonata Hybrid: which gets better mpg?

The Elantra Hybrid. The Elantra Hybrid Blue is rated 54 mpg combined against 51 for the Sonata Hybrid Blue, and the other trims 50 against 47. At 12,000 miles a year and $4.40 a gallon, the Blue trims differ by only about $57 a year, while the Sonata Hybrid has more power: 192 hp against 139.

Which is cheaper, the Elantra or the Sonata?

The Elantra. It starts at $22,825, $4,625 less than the Sonata at $27,450. As hybrids, the Elantra Hybrid Blue ($25,650) costs $3,550 less than the Sonata Hybrid Blue ($29,200). Prices exclude the $1,295 destination charge.

Which is better, the Elantra or the Sonata?

It depends on how you drive. The Elantra is better for city driving and tight budgets: it costs less, uses less fuel, parks more easily and has more rear legroom. The Sonata is better for highway commutes and tall drivers: it has more front room, more power, available AWD and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Which is more reliable, the Elantra or the Sonata?

They rate the same. RepairPal gives both 4.0 out of 5, with average repairs of $363 a year for the Elantra and $406 for the Sonata. Both carry Hyundai's 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle warranty and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage.

2025 Hyundai Sonata vs Elantra: what changed for 2026?

Very little mechanically. For 2026, the Elantra added the SEL Sport Premium trim and standard rear USB-C ports, and the Sonata replaced its SEL and SEL Convenience with the SEL Sport and its Hybrid SE with the Hybrid Blue. A 2025 model of either car has the same engines, dimensions and warranty.

Sonata vs Azera or Accent: are those still sold?

No. Hyundai stopped selling the Azera, its large sedan above the Sonata, in the U.S. after the 2017 model year, and the subcompact Accent after 2022. Today the Sonata is Hyundai's largest sedan and the Elantra its smallest. Used Accents and Azeras are still out there; see our used Hyundai guide.
