Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs Ioniq 6: Which Hyundai EV Should You Buy?

Published October 23, 2026 · Last updated October 23, 2026

Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 in front of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge

The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 share the same 800-volt platform, motors and ultra-fast charging, so the Hyundai Ioniq 5 vs 6 choice comes down to body style. The Ioniq 5 is a hatchback crossover with more than twice the cargo space; the Ioniq 6 is a sleek sedan with more range, up to 342 miles against 318. One more difference: Hyundai dropped the regular Ioniq 6 from its US lineup after 2025, so the 2027 Ioniq 5, from $35,250, is the one you can buy new today.

Quick Verdict

Ioniq 5 or Ioniq 6: The Short Answer

  • Choose the Ioniq 5 for space and convenience: 26.3 cubic feet of cargo against 11.2, more rear headroom, a built-in NACS port for Tesla Superchargers and a lower price.
  • Choose the Ioniq 6 for range: up to 342 miles from a 0.22 drag coefficient. Today that means a 2025 model, new or certified pre-owned.
  • Our take: for most New York drivers, the Ioniq 5.

Model-year timing: We compare the 2027 Ioniq 5 with the 2025 Ioniq 6, the last regular Ioniq 6 sold in the US. Hyundai confirmed in March 2026 that only the 641-hp Ioniq 6 N continues here, citing slow sales and tariffs (Cars.com). Browse every new Ioniq 5 or certified pre-owned Hyundai at Plaza Hyundai.

Cargo is the big gap: 26.3 cubic feet behind the Ioniq 5's rear seat, 58.5 folded, against an 11.2-cubic-foot trunk in the Ioniq 6. Strollers and airport luggage fit far more easily in the Ioniq 5.

Range and Charging

The Ioniq 6 goes 24 to 26 miles farther: 342 miles for a 2025 SE RWD against 318 for a long-range Ioniq 5 RWD, and 316 against 290 with AWD. Both charge from 10 to 80% in about 18 to 20 minutes on a 350-kW charger. In New York, where many drivers have no home charger, the Ioniq 5's built-in NACS port is a real edge: it plugs straight into Tesla Superchargers, while the Ioniq 6 needs an adapter.

Estimated annual home-charging cost at 12,000 miles, using EPA ratings and New York's average residential electricity price of 29.5 cents per kWh in June 2026 (Empire Center, EIA data). Ioniq 6 figure is the EPA rating for the 2023–2024 SE Long Range RWD (Energy Star).
