2027 Hyundai Sonata: What Changes, Release Date and Pricing for New York Drivers
Published August 20, 2026 · Last updated August 20, 2026

The Sonata is the only midsize sedan still sold with a 290-horsepower performance trim, a 51-mpg hybrid and a starting price under $30,000 with freight. In a city where a tank of gas disappears on the BQE, that combination lands differently than it does in the suburbs. Here is where the 2027 model stands.
What's changing on the 2027 Hyundai Sonata?
Two answers are circulating, and they lead to very different shopping decisions.
The first is the big one. Korean industry outlets reported in December 2025 that Hyundai confirmed development of a ninth-generation Sonata under the code DN9, with a home-market debut expected in the second half of 2026. Reporting describes a break from the current car's low, coupe-like shape: a squarer, more upright body under a design language Hyundai calls "Art of Steel," nodding back to the boxy 1985 original, plus a hybrid-first powertrain strategy and Hyundai's new Pleos operating system with its own app store and an AI assistant. None of it is official U.S. specification.
The second answer matters more if you are buying this fall. Edmunds expects the 2027 U.S. Sonata to arrive essentially unchanged, and the 2027 photography reaching dealers supports that — the assets are still the current car, N Line files included. So the redesign is real, its U.S. timing is unconfirmed, and the first 2027 Sonata you can order is very likely the current car with minor equipment shuffling.

When is the 2027 Hyundai Sonata release date?
Release timing at a glance
- Officially announced: no. Hyundai has published no 2027 Sonata press material, trim sheet or U.S. pricing.
- Recent cadence: the 2026 Sonata went on sale in the fall of 2025; the restyled 2024 was revealed August 30, 2023 and reached dealers that December.
- Likely U.S. window: late 2026 into early 2027.
- The redesign question: the DN9 is expected to debut in South Korea in the back half of 2026; whether it reaches U.S. showrooms as a 2027 or later is unconfirmed.
- Order of arrival: gas trims typically lead, with hybrid allocation a few weeks behind.
- What to do now: tell us the trim, drivetrain and color you want and we'll flag the first matching allocation — no deposit, no obligation.
A note that applies every year: the weeks a new model year is announced are usually the best weeks to buy the outgoing one, because incentives on remaining stock frequently beat whatever launches next. Our lease deals show where that stands this month.
Will the 2027 Hyundai Sonata cost more?
Probably, modestly. The 2026 Sonata opened $400 above the 2025 car while Hyundai moved the other way on the hybrid, adding an entry-level Blue trim that cut roughly $2,000 off the price of getting into one. Trim engineering, not blanket increases, has been doing the work.
If the 2027 is a carryover, expect a small bump in the middle of the range. If it is the DN9 redesign, new platform tech, the Pleos software stack and a hybrid-led lineup all point upward, and the industry expectation is that the entry price climbs. That is speculation; nothing about 2027 pricing is confirmed.
One thing that has nothing to do with sticker price: factory financing moves independently of MSRP, and a $400 increase absorbed by a better money factor never shows up on a payment. A pre-approval — no Social Security number or date of birth required — tells you more than any published figure.
2027 Sonata trims compared
Hyundai has not released a 2027 trim sheet, so the table below is the confirmed 2026 lineup: six trims, three powertrains, all-wheel drive on one of them.
| Trim | Engine & drivetrain | Output | EPA mpg (city/hwy/comb) | 2026 starting MSRP | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline | |||||
| SE | 2.5L four, 8-speed automatic, FWD | 191 hp / 181 lb-ft | 28 / 38 / 32 | $27,300 | Lowest price, best gas mpg, 12.3-inch touchscreen |
| SEL Sport | 2.5L four, 8-speed automatic, FWD | 191 hp / 181 lb-ft | 25 / 36 / 29 | $29,000 | 18-inch wheels, heated seats, wireless charging |
| SEL Sport AWD | 2.5L four, 8-speed automatic, HTRAC AWD | 191 hp / 181 lb-ft | 24 / 33 / 27 | $30,500 (AWD adds $1,500) | The only Sonata with all-wheel drive |
| N Line | 2.5L turbo, 8-speed wet dual-clutch, FWD | 290 hp / 311 lb-ft | 23 / 32 / 27 | $35,900 | 19-inch wheels, quad exhaust, sport seats |
| Hybrid (2.0L + electric motor, 6-speed automatic, FWD only) | |||||
| Blue Hybrid | 2.0L hybrid, 6-speed automatic, FWD | 192 hp combined | 47 / 56 / 51 | $29,050 | Highest mpg of any Sonata; new for 2026 |
| SEL Hybrid | 2.0L hybrid, 6-speed automatic, FWD | 192 hp combined | 44 / 51 / 47 | $32,450 | Heated seats, power driver's seat, panoramic sunroof |
| Limited Hybrid | 2.0L hybrid, 6-speed automatic, FWD | 192 hp combined | 44 / 51 / 47 | $38,250 | Leather, ventilated seats, head-up display, Bose audio |
Three things the table does not say. The hybrid uses a six-speed automatic rather than a CVT, which is why it drives like a normal car. All-wheel drive is gas-only. And the trunk holds 15.6 cubic feet on every trim — the hybrid battery cost no cargo space.
How it compares with the last restyle
The current Sonata is the eighth generation, launched for 2020 and given an unusually heavy mid-cycle restyle for 2024 — the reference point for anything described as new.
Outside, the shield grille gave way to the full-width Seamless Horizon Lamp, hidden headlights and flatter H-pattern taillights. Inside, the change was larger: two 12.3-inch screens under one curved panel, the gear selector moved to the steering column, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto standard, physical climate controls left in place. Mechanically it dropped the 1.6-liter turbo and added HTRAC all-wheel drive for the first time in Sonata history. Everything since has been housekeeping, so a 2026 or expected 2027 Sonata is, day to day, that 2024 restyle.

Hybrid, gas or N Line for a New York routine?
The gap between the powertrains is wider here than the spec sheet suggests, because city driving punishes and rewards different things.
The hybrid wins on math. 47 mpg in the city against the SE's 28 is not a rounding difference, and hybrids do their best work where traffic is worst — crawling on Atlantic Avenue, sitting on Queens Boulevard, idling in a tunnel queue. It also never needs a plug, which matters if you park on the street.
The gas car wins on price and on winter. The SE is the cheapest way into a midsize sedan with a 12.3-inch screen and the full SmartSense suite, and the SEL Sport is the only Sonata with all-wheel drive.
The N Line wins on the part nobody puts in a brochure. Merging is the riskiest thing most New York drivers do routinely, and 290 horsepower through a dual-clutch gearbox makes a short on-ramp a non-event. It also rides on 19-inch wheels, which on our pavement means real care around curbs.

What the awards actually say
The Sonata's record is strongest where things get measured rather than felt. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2026 Sonata its TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, its highest, under 2026 criteria tightened around rear-seat protection. NHTSA rated both the Sonata and Sonata Hybrid 5 stars overall.
U.S. News & World Report ranks the 2026 Sonata #2 among midsize cars and named it a finalist for Best Midsize Car for the Money and Best Midsize Car for Families, with the Hybrid a finalist for Best Hybrid Car for Families. Kelley Blue Book keeps it on the Best Midsize Cars list. Finalist is not winner — but neither the Accord nor the Camry offers a 290-hp version anymore.
Brand-wide, Hyundai collected seven IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK awards for 2026, six of them the plus designation. Coverage backs it up: 5 years/60,000 miles basic and 10 years/100,000 miles on both the powertrain and the hybrid battery.
Why the Sonata makes sense on New York streets
Start with the part nobody advertises: a midsize sedan is easier to live with here than a midsize SUV. The Sonata is low, rides on a 111.8-inch wheelbase with a 35.9-foot turning circle, and clears the posted height limits in older garages that a roof-railed crossover has to think about. Taking a spot you would have skipped in an SUV is a small daily win that compounds over years of ownership.
Then running costs. Insurance, tolls and garage rent arrive whether or not you drove that week, so the variable you control is fuel — and 51 mpg combined on the Blue Hybrid is the most effective lever in this class. Add a 15.6-cubic-foot trunk that takes two airport bags without folding anything, blind-spot monitoring that earns its keep backing out between parked box trucks, and Bluelink remote start for January mornings.
Two honest cautions. There is no all-wheel-drive hybrid, so you choose between the fuel economy and the traction — and where snow is usually cleared within a day, good tires often matter more than the drivetrain. The N Line's 19-inch wheels are a real consideration on freeze-thaw pavement. Want a smaller footprint?
